Team Fortress 2, Using your spy disguise

When beta came out by pre-ordering the orange box, many people took advantage of this opportunity to experiment with new classes before it was release. I happened to be one of these people. I started out with the basics, engineer, soldier, and heavy.
The spy class was one I did not like too much at first. I found it extremely hard to mimic enemy movements and not get caught. This was not only a problem for me but for new enemy spy’s that had not mastered the art of “mimicking”.
What is mimicking exactly? Well to become a master spy in TF2 you have to not only be good at conserving your cloak meter and be quick at back stabs. There is one more important skill and it’s called mimicking enemy movements. Those of you that have played have seen enemy spy’s going around following you in their disguise it is obvious and usually end’s up in their demise. It really is hard to not make it obvious. I mean you true intent is to get your kill and too often this ends up you following or making weird movements.
Some tips that I found to be helpful when playing the spy class:
- When a spy try to refrain from disguising yourself as enemy: engineers, medics, and scouts. These are the real obvious ones.
- Engineers are frequently asked to “pull out your wrench” This is the other teams way of seeing if you are in disguise or not.
- Medics heal frequently, so if you are a spy and cannot heal an enemy they will quickly find out your true faux self.
- Scouts have a special ability in that they can run at un-normal speeds. If you are a spy disguised as a scout you move at spy speed but your legs look as though they are of a scout. It makes this weird illusion for others, and can be obvious at times.
- Personally I have found the sniper disguise to produce many kills on maps such as ctf_2fort, Especially.
- I usually disguise as sniper from spawn. Cloak right before I enter the bridge area.
- Sneak into enemy’s bottom floor where there are two openings that lead to the bridge. But here is the key. YOU MUST ACT LIKE A SNIPER!
- I end up strafing a bit, and I crouch. I was amazed by how many people walked past me without notice.

Yeah, being a spy definitely isn’t easy, especially since there’s no friendly fire in TF2. Even when doing reasonable things, I’m often shot at and killed.
I’ve had mixed results with spies. During one session, I racked up 14 kills as a spy, but I have yet to duplicate that. Snipers, though, are definitely the best disguise, since they often crouch forever without taking a shot. Getting into the other team’s territory, though…now that’s not so easy.
Thank you for your advice. Can you give some advice for the other roles? Oh, I’m putting this blog on my blog roll as well, I hope you don’t mind.
